The Types Of Relatives You May Meet During CNY (1/3)

February is knocking at the door! Soon, the Chinese New Year will be upon us and even with the stricter restrictions for visitations during this festive season, I am sure most of us are looking forward to good food and yummy CNY snacks!

But … Every CNY period also brings us into contact with relatives we don’t quite understand.

Well, that is unless you are familiar with the Enneagram.

So, in this article, I thought “Why not do an article on the Types of relatives you may meet during CNY and YOU guess what their Enneagram Types are?

For those of you who have attended our Level 1 and 2 courses, this may be a fun exercise for you to apply your Typing skills. For those who haven’t attended our courses but have been following our Tips and Tricks articles faithfully, here’s a chance for you to see if you have read and understood enough to correctly guess the Types.

Okay, ready? Let’s do this! Here are this week’s featured relatives!

The ‘You Should Have Some Standards’ Relative

This relative is the self- appointed ‘standards checker’ of every household. No matter how clean and tidy you think your house is, this detailed oriented relative WILL find something that’s not right.

You would often hear this relative say, “Aiyo this pineapple tarts are so crumbly! Not nice at all!” or “Wah, so old already, still not wanting to get your messy life in order ah?

As you read the above comments, do they make your heart skip a haunted beat and make beads of sweat form on your face and under your armpits? Yes, their high standards can often make the people around them feel that way but they also cannot help themselves because ‘mistakes just jump out at them’!

If you have guessed that this was a Type 1 relative, you are right!

The ‘Always Want To Give Advice’ Relative

Wah, you still figuring out your life? Come, come let me give you some advice. Sure can help one, I also have been through this!

Wah, your baby looks so small, it really needs to eat more, let me share with you what works …

Your rice cooker may need changing in a year’s time, get this brand instead, it will last you more than 5 years …

Sound familiar? This relative is the one that you often dread going into a one on one conversation with about your life because he or she ALWAYS has advice to help you figure out your problems.

No matter how you tell them that you will be okay figuring things out on your own, this relative will STILL plonk down beside you and give you advice even when you have repeatedly told them there is no need to. So, that is when you resign to their fate and just dutifully nod and agree to whatever they are saying to you at that time.

So, did you get it right? Did you guess Type 2? If you did, well done!

The ‘What If’ Relative

This is the relative who always seem to be jittery and on edge. Every time, they do not see who they expect coming through the door, they will always launch into a tirade of “What if something happened to them ah?”, “What if they didn’t want to come because all their favourite relatives are not here?”, “What if they don’t want to see us as family anymore?

This relative can be very emotionally draining for some of us and yet, they cannot seem to snap out of the ‘what ifs’ and focus on the ‘what now’. Worst case scenarios is the domain their mind always seem to be living in.

Even if you are just commenting on how you love the rainy weather Singapore has been experiencing in recent months, this skeptical relative would still comment, “Be careful ah, the floors would always be so slippery and the weather may cause you to have rheumatism in future if you are not careful.”

Anyone guessed Type 6? You are spot on!

So there you have it. Week 1’s featured relatives are in the house!

I hope you enjoyed this very candid look at some of the Types of relative you may encounter during this CNY period. Of course, I have taken the lowest mastery examples of the Enneagram Types featured here, so it should not be that difficult for you to figure out each relatives’ Type.

Be safe and may all your preparations for CNY go smoothly for you in the coming weeks!
