Hi Cindy,

It’ s been a month now since we started this circuit breaker measures and I have been struggling to cope. I miss my friends A LOT and I’m having temptations of visiting them– I know I shouldn’t but these thoughts are lingering on my head. Aside from the usual texting, calling and video-calling, is there anything else I could do to feel connected with my friends?

Many thanks,

Michelle

Dear Michelle,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling to cope during this time. I hope that you won’t give in to your temptation of visiting any of your friends. Please stay at home and be safe. I have a couple of tips for you to get through during this circuit breaker period.

First, schedule a time each day to reach out to 5-10 of your friends. If you have a certain group of friends you want to (virtually) hang-out with, initiate to set a date and time for all of you to go online and chat. When catching up with friends, share how you’re feeling. This can help you to better understand and manage how you feel. You might also feel less alone in how you feel and gain useful advice from the people you trust. Also, it’s also a good time to find out about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their life.

Second, do some online activities together. During this difficult time, it’s also good to have some light relief to talk and laugh about. Use technology and get creative. Play online games together, do a zoom bar, set-up a Netflix party, do an online yoga class together, or go for an online karaoke. The possibilities are endless.

Third, surprise each other with simple pleasures. We can’t go out, but we can let technology and delivery folks do the magic for us! A good way to do this is to play angel-mortal game, if you don’t know how this works, a simple Google search will do the trick. You can now deliver food and goodies to your friends at the click of your finger (literally). These gestures can help us connect and keep that sense of togetherness that we all need right now.

I hope these tips will help you in one way or another and that you feel better soon.

Much love,

Cindy
